SANDAKAN:   Royal Brunei Yacht Club sailor Muhammad Fadzlin Hassan becomes the first foreign participant of the biggest sailing event in Sabah’s east coast held at the sea fronting Sandakan Yacht Club from Nov 18 to 20.

The 37-years-old arrived in Sandakan on Thursday night to take part in Sandakan Regatta/ Sandakan River Race/ Sabah Closed 2016 which began on Friday.

Muhammad Fadzlin was the president of Brunei National Windsurfing Association from 2008 to 2013. He started windsurfing at the age of nine and only began sailing two months ago, after consultation with Mohamad Mostaman Ismail, the Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) sailing coach.

Muhammad Fadzlin who owns a windsurfing shop in Brunei, joined the Royal Brunei Yacht Club more than one year ago.

According to Muhammad Fadzlin, although still a staunch windsurfer, he decided to take up sailing because it is a popular sport in Brunei.

I took part in the annual Royal Brunei Regatta held last week and only found out about Sandakan Regatta/ Sandakan River Race/ Sabah Closed during a recent telephone conversation with Mostaman, Muhammad Fadzlin said.

He said he drove all the way from Brunei for the event in Sandakan to gain more exposure and experience.

Muhammad Fadzlin was welcomed by Syc commodore Richard Lim, rear commodore cum organising chairman James Leong, Mostaman and another Sandakan Yacht Club sailing coach Saiful Zamri at SYC on Thursday night.

Meanwhile SYC rear commodore cum organising chairman James said with Muhammad Fadzlin’s participation, the total number of sailors taking part in this year’s edition of the annual regatta is 64.

The participating teams are Sandakan Yacht Club, Kinabalu Yacht Club, Tawau Yacht Club, Sabah Sailing Association, Navy Yacht Club Kota Kinabalu and Royal Brunei Yacht Club.
