SANDAKAN: Nine secondary students from lower income families in the district received financial assistance from Badan Amal dan Kebajikan Tenaga Isteri-Isteri (BAKTI) yesterday.

Datin Lindai Lee, wife of Datuk Liew Vui Keong, distributed the annual BAKTI financial aid to the selected students during a presentation ceremony held at Indah Keranamu Restaurant here.

Among those present were Puan Sri Melinda Kurup (wife of Tan Sri Joseph Kurup), Puan Sri Hadijah Teng Abdullah (wife of Tan Sri Pandikar Amin), Sabah Finance Ministry Political Secretary Datin Maizatul Akmam Datuk Haji Ahmad Alawi, Datin Junaidah Aji (wife of Sekong Assemblyman Datuk Samsudin Yahya) and parents of the recipients.

Speaking at the function, Lindai hoped the financial aid provided by BAKTI to the recipients would help lessen the burden of their respective families.

"This is the eighth year BAKTI is giving financial assistance to selected students from lower income families in Sandakan who excelled in their Secondary Three academic achievements," Lindai said.

The students were thankful to BAKTI for extending the financial assistance to them.  The recipients are Elayne Lo Yee Ling (SMJK Tiong Hua), Leong Wing Kin (SMJK Tiong Hua), Jessie Liew Man Kee (SM Yu Yuan), Chen Mui Kee (SMJK Tiong Hua), Lee Pin Chyi (SM Yu Yuan), Chan Hoe Yin (SM Yu Yuan), Shirley Syn See Bui (SM Sung Siew), Nur Afiqah Mohd Noor (SMK Merpati) and Evy Liew Yee Jiun (SM Yu Yuan).

Since its inception in 1977, BAKTI has been involved in many charitable activities to help poor and less fortunate Malaysians regardless of race, religion and culture.

The members of BAKTI consist of the wife of the Prime Minister, the wife of the Deputy Prime Minister, wife of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, wife of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Senate, and wives of the cabinet ministers and deputy ministers. Wives of former cabinet members become associate members, while past presidents become honorary members.

The objectives of BAKTI are to aid the less fortunate, to organize suitable charity programs and raise fund, to enhance knowledge and experience of members through activities that foster goodwill amongst members.
