MP BATU SAPI URGED THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO EXTEND THE RUNWAY OF SANDAKAN AIRPORT

SANDAKAN: The extension of the Sandakan Airport runway will be implemented under the 11th Malaysia Plan.

This was disclosed by Transport Minister Dato Sri Liow Tiong Lai when winding up the debate on the 11th Malaysia Plan for the Transport Ministry in Parliament.

Liow also responded to two other proposed infrastructure development projects, i.e. a network of railway to connect the major towns of Sabah, and dredging the Sandakan Port to enable berthing of larger vessels.

He said that the Sabah Railway Department and Sabah Ports Authority are responsible for these proposed projects.

Batu Sapi Member of Parliament Datuk Linda Tsen Thau Lin had during the recent debate urged the Federal Government to extend the runway of Sandakan Airport to enable larger aircrafts to land, and bring more tourists and passengers to Sandakan, promoting local industry and commerce, tourism as well as other economic activities.

“The Sandakan Airport terminal has been upgraded recently. As the transportation and economic hub for the East Coast of Sabah, upgrading airport facilities including extension of the runway from 7,000 feet (2,134 m) at present to 9800 feet (2 987m) is very important for Sabah,” she added.

Datuk Linda added that she would contact Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Infrastructure Development, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan to request the Sabah Railway Department and the Sabah Ports Authority to expedite the planning and implementation of these two proposed projects, with the technical and financial assistance by the Federal Government.
